I just stumbled upon these fabulous sculptures by Amanda Green who I understand is a recent graduate of Glamorgan University. Apparently her inspiration comes from the work she carries out as a care worker and the prejudice she has witnessed towards those who don’t conform to societies aesthetic standards.
It’s the grotesque nature of these sculptures that really appeals to me with their reference to the abject body. They straddle that ground between the abstract and the figurative and appear to exploit it to great effect. halt-Garpham described the Grotesque as being that which we experience that stands at the “margin of consciousness between the known and the unknown”. It is this which I see in Green’s sculptures; there is a suggestions of human limbs but at the same time the forms are twisted and distorted into something alien.
These works are made from tights stuffed with wadding and so I am intrigued to find out if they have the same impact in the flesh, so to speak. Working with three dimensional forms myself I a very much aware of the way in which a photograph can change the way in which work is seen. Fortunately Green is exhibiting at TactileBOSCH next month so hopefully I’ll get to see the work for myself.
